Getting Your Life Back: Virtual Group Skills Training April 19 to June 14, 2024
SOAR Psychological Services, in partnership with Piers & Associates, is excited to continue to offer Skills Training Groups for military members, Veterans, and RCMP members. Getting Your Life Back group training aims to help individuals who would benefit from learning and practicing skills that assist with managing extreme emotions and reducing impulsive behaviours that interfere with functioning. The goal is to increase functioning, well-being, and healthy relationships for those experiencing mental health conditions.
Groups will be held virtually over an 8-week period with 25 hours of skills content. Skills training group commitment is a total of three hours per week: Fridays from 9-11am and Mondays from 4-5pm, commencing April 19, 2024. Ideally, individuals will complete Getting Your Life Back twice to obtain the full benefits of skill integration. Getting Your Life Back consists of psychoeducational components focused on the physiological impacts of trauma on the nervous system and brain, as well as skills informed by Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), with additional content from EMDR Therapy (EMDR): Resourcing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Somatic Experiencing (SE).
During the eight weeks of training, key skills from the four DBT modules: Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness will be presented. Mindfulness skills assist the individual to remain grounded and present, gaining awareness of themselves and situations, thus increasing their ability to use skills more effectively. Distress Tolerance skills assist with managing crisis situations and coping with difficult or traumatic events without making things worse. Emotion regulation skills assist the individual to reduce emotional vulnerability, identify and gain awareness of the function of emotions, and reduce reliance on avoidance. Interpersonal Effectiveness skills assist the individual to meet their objectives of saying “no” or getting needs met, while maintaining the relationship and their self-respect.
An initial individual therapy commitment session is required to ensure that Getting Your Life Back skills group is the best fit for the individual and the client is committed to fully engaging in the group to the best of their ability.
The aim of this skills training group is to augment concurrent individual therapy sessions, which is highly recommended, to assist with skills use specific to their needs. As such, we encourage participants to share their weekly progress with their individual clinicians.
